Which espresso machine should I buy?
With so many different types of espresso machines on the market, it is common to wonder which espresso machine you should buy. I am here to help you figure out which espresso machine is right for you!
Espresso is a brewing method that originated in Italy in the early 20th century. It is made by pushing hot water (about 190 degrees Fahrenheit) through a puck of ground coffee beans at high pressure (130-150 PSI). The high pressure is what makes the espresso brewing method unique and contributes to the flavor and texture of the drink. While espresso does have a higher caffeine level per ounce than coffee, the total serving of caffeine is often lower in espresso since the serving size is traditionally smaller.
Manual espresso maker
The cheapest option because there are no computers or automated processes involved.
Will most likely last the longest because of the lack of electronic parts and the ability to repair parts.
Not recommended for beginners.
Many variables that could be introduced into your shot of espresso inadvertently.
Generally not recommended.
Semi-automatic espresso machine
Require human interactions.
Most do not have built in grinders.
Give you control over the pump.
Ability to start and stop the brew when you would like.
Most have a frothing wand.
Give the most control for people who are using at home espresso machines.
Great for people who want to get into the science of what makes a great espresso.
These two previous options require a separate grinder to grind your own beans. If you would like more information on coffee bean grinders, check out my blog post here!
Super-automatic espresso machine
Has all the parts of the espresso machine such as the portafilter, portafilter basket, the group screen, bean hopper, doser, grinder, and sometimes steam wand.
Great for high volume.
No learning curve. Makes a delicious drink with the touch of a button.
Ideal for home use with multiple people using the machine.
Great for those who do not want or need the control over their coffee brewing experience.
Set it and forget it.
Tell the machine what type of drink you would like and from there it decides all the other parameters such as how much grounds make up the puck and how much the milk gets frothed.
Which espresso maker should I get?
Ultimately it will come down to what is most important to you. Coffee purists who want the most control over their shot of espresso and are willing to put the time in to learn what makes a great espresso should go with the semi-automatic and a nice grinder. Those who may not have the extra time, or the desire to learn how to operate a more complicated machine (or those who just want to push a button and get a quality espresso or latte) should go with a super-automatic. Is control or convenience most important to you?
